Japan ist ein Land mit zunehmend sinkenden Einwohnerzahlen - in Zukunft nahezu in jedem Bereich ob Land oder Stadt, sowie den größten Metropolen. Ein Grund ist eine der höchsten Alterungen der Gesellschaft, eines der niedrigsten Geburtenraten sowie ein geringeres Migrationsaufkommen aus dem Ausland aufgrund einer auch für die Zukunft sehr wahrscheinliche, strikte Einwanderungspolitik.
Dennoch ist absehbar, dass auch Japan trotz weltweit führender automatisierungs-Tendenzen in immer mehr System und Erwerbsbereiche auf Zuwanderung angewiesen sein wird. Das führt weiterhin zwar zu einer restriktiven Selektion neuer Einwohner und somit zu einem höheren Migrationsaufkommen. Da Japan auch zukünftig ein höheres Wohlstandsniveau vorweisen kann als viele bevölkerungseiche Länder Südostasiens (sowie China) oder gar Südasien kann eine moderate Kompensation durch Zuwanderung aus deisen Landern nach Japan gelingen und erwartet werden. Zumal könnten bis ins Jahr 2050 große Bereiche der gewaltigen Industrie und Dienstleistungsökonomie in personalintensiv bleiben, da komplette Automatisierungen bis zu dieser Zeit (auch bis nach 2060) nicht denkbar erscheinen.
Zwischen den Jahren 2020 und 2050 sind nach eigenen Schätzungen mit 8,9 Millionen Zuwanderern in Japan zu rechnen. (Diese Zahl ergündet sich aus Einzelschätzungen bezüglich der Länder im Verhältnis zur Einwohnerzahl und dem Migrationspotential sowie die Affinität zu Japan). Wie zu erwarten werden der größte Teil der oft gut qualifizierten Arbeitskräfte aus dem Ausland in die zwei Weltmetropolen Tokyo und Osaka ziehen, während auch die kleineren Metropolen (Hiroschima, Sapporo oder Fukuoka) zumindest auskömmlich Arbeits und Servicekräfte anziehen. Schwieriger sind und bleiben die Entwicklungen in den Kleinstädten und auf dem Land, wo sich zwar zunehmend Einheimische Rückkehrer aus den Großstädten an die Orte ihrer Jugend ansiedeln, jedoch selbst oft sehr alt sind und wenig zur Vitalisierung systemrelevanter Bereiche beitragen. Dort bleiibt zu erwarten, dass die Regierungen (aus lokaler und zentraler Ebene) große Anstrengungen unternehmen zur Haltung der Lebensqualität und Sicherung personeller Kapazitäten. Auch in den Kleinstädten sowie den Dörfern bilden ausländische Migranten zukünftig immer wichtigere Gruppen zum Erhalt einer hohen Wohlstandskultur. Vor allem Menschen aus China, Vietnam und den Philippinen, sowie aus dem übrigen Südostasien können sich etwas einfacher in die japanische Gesellschaft integrieren und den hohen Anforderungen aufgrund einer gewissen kulturellen Nähe gerecht werden.
Wahrscheinlich werden andere größere Migrationsgruppen wie Afrikaner oder Südasiaten mehrheitlich in die großen Städte kommen. Dort wird auch gegen jene allgemeine Anti-Internationalistische Tendenz, wie sie in Japan üblich ist und auch lange bleiben wird, eine zunehmende ausländische Community zu erwarten sein. Ein Grund wird die drastische Notwendigkeit zum Erhalt systemrelevanter Bereiche sein die auch in fernerer Zukunft relativ personalintensiv bleiben werden. (Pflege, Gesundheit) Zu erwarten ist zudem mittel bis langfristig eine Liberalisierung der Gesellschaft gegenüber Nicht-Japanern in Großmetropolen wie Tokyo oder Osaka.
Möglicherweise sind lediglich zwei Städte in Japan langfristig demographisch stabil oder auf Wachstumskurs: Naha-Okinawa im äußersten tropischen Südens des Archipels wächst aufgrund seiner klimatischen Position wohl bis 2050 - auch durch ausländische Zuwanderung (Philippiner) allerdings auch durch viele Japaner aus nördlicheren (kalten) Regionen um auf der Insel Okinawa vom wärmeren Klima zu profitieren - trotz der zunehmend dort zu erwartenden Taifune aufgrund des Klimawandels. Zweitens entwickelt sich aus ähnlichen Gründen in klimatischer Hinsicht die kleinere Millionenstadt Fukuoka langfristig stabil; im Jahr 2050 leben dort etwas mehr als noch 2020.
Selbst die Megastadt Tokyo vermag aufgrund ihrer immensen Größe nicht stabil die Bevölkerungszahl zu halten oder gar zu wachsen; trotz konzentrierter Zuwanderung (die meisten Zuwanderer nach Japan wollen nach Tokio), sinkt die Einwohnerzahl künftig immer stärker. Der Hauptgrund ist die sehr hohe Alterung immer größerer Teile der Bevölkerung während auf der anderen Seite die Zahl der Geburten immer weiter sinken wird. Das führt zu einer schärferen Diskrepanz im Verhältnis Sterbe und Geburtenrate die eine gewaltige Anzahl internationaler Zuwanderer bräuchte um zumindest kompensiert zu werden. Eine solch hohe Anzahl neuer Zuwanderer ist jedoch aufgrund einer sehr nachhaltigen Mentalität anti-multikultureller Haltungen der japanischen Gesellschaft und Politik nicht absehbar.
Die höchsten demographischen Verluste dürften weiterhin im Norden Japans zu erwarten sein. Dort setzt sich vor allem in ländlichen Räumen ein starker Rückgang der Einwohnerzahlen fort, da eine Zuwanderung dorthin zwar wieder steigt, jedoch nicht in einem Maß um die Zahlen stabil zu halten. Dafür würden Millionen Menschen nötig sein um allein die zwei nördlichen Regionen Hokkaido und Tohoku demographisch zu stabilisieren. Ab dem Jahr 2050 könnten jedoch die zwei Regionen aufgrund des Klimawandels wieder attraktiver werden, da nördliche Lebensräume eine neue Beliebtheit auch im globalen Kontext zu dieser Zeit erwarten können; Kanada, nördliche US-Bundestaaten sowie Nord und Mitteleuropa als Teil traditioneller Einwanderungsregionen profitieren schon wesentlich früher von dieser Tendenz.
Klimawandel und Ansteig des Meeresspiegels:
Japan mit seinen weiten Küsten ist im Vergleich zu vielen anderen Ländern etwas besser gestellt was langfristige Aussichten bezüglich des unvermeidbaren Ansteigs des Meeres betrifft; mit entsprechend finanziellen und visionären Ressourcen ist absehbar das Japan die Problematik früh genug erkennt und schon bald entscheidend mit dem Bau gewaltiger Deichsysteme beginnt.
Vor allem die drei größten Städte müssen somit schon bald entsprechend geschützt werden. Neben einem massiven allgemeinen Klimaschutz (weltweit) politisch und gesellschaftlich, sind für Japan Wasserbaumaßnahmen wie gewaltige Großdeichprojekte unverzichtbar, da ab dem Jahr 2050 massiv steigende Wasserpegel an den Küsten mindestens bis ins Jahr 2100 nicht aufzuhalten ist. Die Bucht von Tokyo würde ein großer Deich vom übrigen Meer abtrennen, weiterhin sichern hohe Deichsysteme das flache Hinterland östlich von Tokyo bis zum Meer. Osaka könnte durch einen Großdeich in der Wakayama Bucht und eine Deichverbindung zwischen der Inseln Shikoku und Kyushu abgesichert werden; das gesamte Meeresgebiet zwischen drei großen Hauptinseln würde dann ein kontrolliertes Binnenmeer werden, welches durch Gezeitenwerke und Schleusen noch geringfügig mit dem steigenden Ozean verbunden währe.
Nagoya - was als besonderes gefährdet gilt, würde durch einen 19 Kilometer langen Deich geschützt der die Ise Bucht begrenzt.
