Auch die Städte Indiens werden - wie zu erwarten, zu den größten der Welt gehören. Mit der Hauptstadt Delhi sogar mit 58 Millionen Einwohnern im Jahr 2050 so bevölkerungsreich wie z.B. das Land Italien. Weiterhin steigert sich aufgrund der Urbanisierung die Zahl der Millionenstädte deutlich: Sind im Jahr 2025 bereits 63 Städte im Land über eine Million Menschen groß, werden es nach eigenen Berechnungen von M.d.Z. im Jahr 2050 an die 163 Millionenstädte in Indien sein. Zudem erlaubt die noch relativ am Anfang stehende Urbanisierung im Land eine starke Expansion der kleineren Städte in der Fläche was gewaltige Anstrengungen und allgemeines Planungsvermögen verlangt. Der Zeitraum dieser "heißen Transformation" vom Land und Kleinstädte in die Groß und Millionenstädte hat bereits um das Jahr 2010 begonnen und steuert auf einen Höhepunkt zwischen 2030 und 2045 zu. Anschließend stabilisieren sich die Steigerungen um das Jahr 2050 und einige Metropolen würden dann sogar wieder sinkende Einwohnerzahlen erwarten können. Megastädte mit über 10 Millionen Menschen gab es in Indien mit sechs in der Anzahl im Jahr 2020, während es im Jahr 2050 bereits 15 sein werden/könnten.
